New publication by Dr Susan Conway

We are delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of a book by one of our Executive committee, Dr Susan Conway, of SOAS' Centre of South East Asian Studies.

After two years of research, Dr Conway's book HRH Princess Sirindhorn Textile Collection: Symbols of Love and Respect will be published by Amarin in early 2020.

The book is based on the collections of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn, who travels extensively within the kingdom of Thailand and overseas. Wherever she goes, Her Royal Highness receives precious textile gifts. Some textiles in the royal collection were made to order with the aim of promoting local industries, a few were purchased at royal request.

The book has colour photographs of textiles chosen to represent the work of weavers, spinners, dyers and embroiderers from every province in Thailand and photographs of Her Royal Highness accepting these gifts over many years.

These textiles symbolise a relationship between a beloved princess and textile artisans and donors throughout the kingdom.
