Thailand has been one of the most promising countries in Asia for several decades, but due to several factors has suffered from political instability that has hindered economic growth. The country has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic as an important part of the economy is based on tourism, which has almost ceased as international travel has lessened. The economy contracted by almost 10 per cent in 2020, but is forecast to grow in 2021.
Political uncertainty will affect investor confidence, as they assess the impact of mass student protests that started in the summer that called for the resignation of the Prime Minister as well as reform of the monarchy. The political protests come ten years after the monarchist "yellow shirts" occupied the international airport, and six years after the Thai military staged a coup to take over government, which they still control. Now in 2021 it is twenty years after telecommunications multimillionaire Thaksin Shinawatra and his Thai Rak Thai Party (the "red shirts") won an overwhelming victory in the general election running on a populist platform. Political uncertainty seems to be the normal situation in Thailand.
To discuss Thailand in the past twenty years and how this will affect the next twenty years will be a panel including Brian Davidson CMG (British Ambassador to Thailand since 2016), Chris Cracknell (Chairman of Grant Thornton Thailand and former CEO of the OCS Group) and Steve Buckley (Chairman of the Anglo-Thai Society and former British diplomat)."
